Have you ever put on a fake smile? Resisted the urge to cry? Felt good when you woke up but sad by nightfall? If you relate to any of these things, don’t feel ashamed. Like you, so many people feel the exact same feelings. The truth is that many teens deal with mental health struggles daily. While it may be easier to mask your emotions or simply disguise them as fatigue. It is better to embrace your feelings for what they really are: anxiety, depression, anxiousness, or feeling overwhelmed.

According to the CDC, in January 2025, it was reported ”10% of children ages 3-17 had current, diagnosed anxiety (9% of males and 11% of females).”

It is becoming more and more apparent that youth mental health crises are an ongoing issue. The biggest issue is that many young people are unaware of their diagnoses. There are many causes for this, but one of the leading causes is the casual dismissal of youth mental health issues by adults. For example, a child may come home from school and, when asked about their day, will not have a detailed answer. They may also find themselves in solitude often and exhibit a lack of motivation to complete everyday tasks. While an adult may view this as simply “being a teenager” or moodiness, it can be real signs of depression. If gone undiagnosed, it can lead to deeper depression, self-harm, or death. Although it may not be intentional, it is important to acknowledge irregular or abnormal behavior in youth to allow them to have the help that they need.

It is essential to know that there are many resources out there committed to helping youth with any mental health issues they may be struggling with. One of those resources is Genesys Works Houston. Over the past few years, several members of the team have received their Mental Health First Aid Certification Training. In addition, staff and board members dedicate their time, attention, and wellness to the overall well-being of youth. The Genesys Works Houston Manager of Post-Secondary Success, Da’Neisha Reed, stated, “The mental health of our youth is the responsibility of us all. Genesys  Works supports the Future of our young professionals as a whole, not just the Future Workforce.” As she exemplifies the true passions behind what we do at Genesys Works, we also aim to serve as an example for all people to bring attention to this pressing matter. To create an environment where all youth feel seen, heard, valued, and cared for as they become our future.
