Training Houston’s Next Generation of Tech Talent Through Career Accelerator

Houston’s workforce is evolving, and technology is at the center of that transformation. Across industries—including energy, healthcare, aerospace, and business—employers increasingly depend on technology professionals who can solve problems, adapt to change, and keep organizations moving forward. Yet access to the training, credentials, and professional connections needed to enter the technology field isn’t always readily available to everyone.

Through our Career Accelerator: Information Technology Pre-Apprenticeship Program, we are working to bridge that gap by creating accessible pathways into the IT industry and equipping aspiring technology professionals with the skills, confidence, and connections to pursue meaningful careers.

Creating a Practical Pathway Into IT

Career Accelerator is a 13-week hybrid workforce development initiative designed to prepare aspiring technology professionals for entry into high-demand IT careers. Offered at no cost to participants, the program removes financial barriers to professional training while providing technical instruction, industry-recognized credentials, career preparation, and opportunities to build professional networks.

Our goal is to make technology careers more accessible while helping participants understand what it takes to enter, navigate, and grow within the industry.

Equipping Talent With Skills That Lead to Opportunity

At the heart of Career Accelerator is preparation for the CompTIA A+ certification, an industry-recognized credential that establishes a foundation for entry-level IT support and technical operations roles.

Through online instruction and in-person, hands-on learning experiences, participants develop practical knowledge in computer hardware, operating systems, networking, cybersecurity fundamentals, troubleshooting, and customer support.

We recognize that technical knowledge is an important first step, but applying it in a professional environment helps individuals move forward. That’s why our approach connects classroom learning with practical experiences that prepare participants for today’s workplace expectations.

Preparing People, Not Just Professionals

One of the things I value most about Career Accelerator is that we recognize workforce development is about more than teaching technical skills. It’s about preparing people to see themselves in opportunities they may not have previously considered possible.

Throughout the program, participants strengthen their workplace communication, develop interview skills, connect with instructors and industry leaders, explore career pathways, and build relationships that can support their transition from training to employment.

As Manager of Workforce Initiatives, I see the impact of this work in the confidence participants develop, the skills they gain, and the possibilities they begin to envision for themselves.

Real Stories. Real Growth. Real Possibilities.

The impact of Career Accelerator is best understood through the experiences of the individuals who participate. Every journey is different, and sometimes the greatest transformation begins when you discover an opportunity you never imagined pursuing.

For Charlotte Luna, a participant in PAC 8, the journey into IT began with uncertainty but developed into a newfound interest in the field and confidence in her ability to pursue a career in technology.

“I had no interest in IT at first, and it was challenging to keep up with all the studying and new terminology,” she said. “But with the support of my program coordinator, I built the skills and confidence I needed, and I realized the constant change in technology makes it exciting—I could actually see myself doing this long-term.”

Charlotte’s experience reflects what we strive to create through Career Accelerator: an environment where individuals can explore new possibilities, overcome challenges, develop confidence, and recognize potential they may not have previously seen in themselves.

A Vision That Continues to Create Opportunity

Career Accelerator was built on a vision of expanding access to technology careers and creating opportunities for individuals to develop skills that translate into meaningful employment. That vision continues through the program’s growth and the commitment of those who helped establish it.

As a founding member of the program, Jarale Jones has been part of the journey from its early beginnings and understands the importance of creating accessible pathways into the technology workforce.

“When we started Career Accelerator, the vision was to create opportunities for individuals to access technology training and see a future for themselves in an industry that continues to grow. Seeing how the program has evolved and the number of individuals it has reached reinforces why this work matters. We’re not just introducing people to technology; we’re helping open doors, build confidence, and create pathways that can change the trajectory of someone’s career.”

Measuring Progress, Expanding Possibility

The impact of Career Accelerator is reflected in both its reach and the commitment of its participants.

To date, the program has served 142 trainees across nine completed cohorts, achieving an impressive 95% average completion rate.

Behind every statistic is an individual who chose to invest in their future, commit to learning something new, and take a step toward a career in technology.

These milestones represent more than successful program completion. They show the value of accessible workforce training and the potential that emerges when individuals have the right tools, resources, and support.

Strengthening Houston’s Workforce Connection

As Houston continues to grow as a hub for innovation and technology, the demand for skilled talent will continue to create opportunities for individuals prepared to meet the moment.

Programs like Career Accelerator help strengthen the connection between emerging talent and the employers who need them. By providing accessible, career-focused training, we are contributing to a stronger local workforce while creating opportunities for individuals who may not otherwise have access to high-quality technical preparation.

We also recognize that building a stronger workforce requires collaboration. Employers, industry professionals, educators, and community partners all have a role to play in helping emerging talent access meaningful career opportunities.

At Career Accelerator, we see the opportunity to build those connections and help create a more inclusive pipeline between education, professional networks, and employment.
