At Genesys Works, we are committed to ensuring the career success of our program completers by connecting them to college support resources, career opportunities, and professional networks. As a volunteer mentor, you have the opportunity to be paired with a member of the Genesys Works Talent Development Pipeline and support their career journey. With this program, we hope you will collaborate with your mentee to foster the growth of an impactful relationship and assist in growing the knowledge and skills needed for that mentee to achieve career success.

QUALITIES OF AN EFFECTIVE MENTOR
Empowering
- Encourages mentee to see the impact of their strengths and abilities
- Supports mentee as they make and take ownership of decisions
Supporting
- Builds trust through sharing personal and professional advice and resources
- Honors commitments by meeting when agreed and prioritizing mentee
Challenging
- Sets high expectations of performance and encourages a growth-mindset
- Poses questions that challenge mentee’s thought processes
Coaching
- Helps establish mentee’s five-year plan by supporting professional development
- Empowers mentee to connect previous experiences and future goals
EXPECTATIONS OF GENESYS WORKS MENTORS
Time
- Commit to supporting mentee for one year, starting in May 2020
- Engage with mentee each month, with one meeting at least 30 minutes in length
- Attend three cornerstone mentorship events per year, hosted by Genesys Works
Communication
- Identify best practices and methods for communication with mentee and use them reliably
- Listen empathetically to feelings as well as facts
- Introduce mentee to connections within professional network to expand career options
GENESYS WORKS MENTOR SUPPORT
Communication
- Genesys Works will send a regular mentorship newsletter full of ideas and events to help mentors foster strong professional relationships with mentees
Events
- Genesys Works will plan regular social and professional development events for mentors and mentees
Support
- Genesys Works staff will check in with each mentoring pair on a bi-monthly basis to offer support
